What Is A Laneway Home?
Laneway houses are small houses situated on a residential lot, typically adjacent to a back alley or laneway. Commonly used by family members, or as an additional rental property, laneway houses have become popular additions in Metro Vancouver and now Burnaby.
When Can Laneway Houses Be Built?
The current timeline suggests that residents may apply for a permit to build a laneway home on their property in fall 2023. This process to permit laneway home construction in Burnaby is underway.
What Permits Are Required?
Specific permits for the construction of a laneway house, soon to be outlined, will be required. Any existing building permits must be submitted for revision and approval to include laneway houses in current builds.
How Many Laneway Houses Per Lot?
One laneway home can be constructed per lot which already includes a single family home, and must provide direct connection to a lane or local street. Laneway houses are not currently permitted adjacent to a duplex.
How Big Can A Laneway House Be?
The size of a laneway house is based on the size of the property. It may be up to 20% of the area, up to a maximum of 140 m2 (1,507 square feet). The laneway home may be up to two storeys, its maximum height determined by your residential district’s zoning laws.
